DETAILS:

Police Officer Gregg Casillas was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a man in the 1400 block of South Palomares Street following a vehicle pursuit.

The vehicle fled after officers attempted to stop it for reckless driving. The driver crashed into another vehicle before fleeing on foot and entering an apartment. As Officer Casillas and another officer attempted to make contact with the man he fired through the apartment door, striking both officers.

The officers were both transported to a local hospital where Officer Casillas succumbed to his wounds. The man surrendered after remaining barricaded inside his home for more than 15 hours. He was charged with Officer Casillas' murder as well as several counts of attempted murder of a peace officer.

Officer Casillas had served with the Pomona Police Department for six months and was still in field training at the time of the incident. He had been employed as a civilian with the agency for three years before entering the police academy. He is survived by his wife and two children.

DETAILS:

Deputy Sheriff David Manning was killed in a vehicle crash as he pursued a car on Highway 111 halfway between Tarboro and Pinetops, at approximately 6:15 pm.

His patrol car collided with a pickup truck traveling the opposite direction. The vehicle he was pursuing crashed in a roadside ditch a short distance away. The driver fled on foot but was later apprehended. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and hit & run, ( property damage), and released after posting bond. There is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the N.C. Highway Patrol and the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency. The occupants of the truck, a man and his wife, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Deputy Manning had served with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office for four months. He is survived by his daughter, finance, parents, three brothers, two grandmothers, and a grandfather.

Reserve Officer Christopher Lawton

Reserve Officer Chris Lawton was killed after being intentionally struck by a vehicle as he attempted to serve a narcotics-related felony warrant.

He and another officer had spotted the wanted subject inside a U-Haul truck parked at the Walmart on Plank Road, in Baker, Louisiana. After observing the subject for several minutes the officers parked their patrol car behind the truck and began to approach it on foot. The subject saw them walking alongside the truck and started to drive away, pinning Officer Lawton between the truck and a shopping cart corral.

Officer Lawton's partner was able to broadcast a description of the vehicle, which was located approximately 20 minutes later. The driver was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, hit and run, and being a fugitive from justice. A second occupant of the vehicle was charged with obstruction of justice.

Officer Lawton served as a part-time, unpaid reserve officer with Zachary Police Department and also served as a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department.

Police Officer Scotty Hamilton was shot and killed at approximately 11:30 pm as he and a Kentucky State Police trooper conducted criminal patrol on Hurricane Road, in the Hurricane Creek area of Pike County.

The officers were in the area as a result of recent narcotics activity when they encountered a suspicious vehicle. As Officer Hamilton checked the area for the vehicle's occupants he encountered a man and was shot in the head.

One suspect was taken into custody at the scene. A second suspect fled the scene but apprehended several days later.

Officer Hamilton had served with the Pikeville Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and child.

DETAILS:

Deputy Sheriff Ryan Zirkle was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 1, north of Point Reyes Station, while responding to a 911 hangup call shortly after 12:00 am.

His vehicle left the wet roadway as it entered a curve in the road, and struck a tree on the driver's side door. He was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Zirkle had served with the Marin County Sheriff's Office for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his fiancée, parents, and two brothers.

K9 Eico was struck and killed by a vehicle in the 2100 block of Lilac Avenue.

Eico's handler had stopped to fuel up his patrol car and to allow him to exercise. Eico inadvertently ran onto Lilac Avenue and was struck by a vehicle.

K9 Eico had served with the Davis County Sheriff's Department for two years.

DETAILS:

Firefighter Stacey Leigh Boulware collapsed while on duty at Cobb County Fire Station 5. Firefighter Boulware was reported to having responded to two emergency calls and passing a fire department physical agility test in the hours prior to her falling ill. Boulware was treated by fellow responders then transported to Kennestone Hospital where, despite all efforts, she succumbed to a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined.

Firefighter M.V. Hudson

DETAILS:

Firefighter M.V. Hudson was injured in a fire tender (tanker) crash on the evening of February 28th. Hudson and two other firefighters were responding to a grass fire when the apparatus left the right side of the roadway and rolled over, badly damaging the cab and injuring all three occupants. The three firefighters had to be extracted from the vehicle and were rushed to the hospital. Two firefighters were subsequently released, but Firefighter Hudson died while in the hospital on March 10, 2018.
