DETAILS:

Police Officer Andres Laza-Caraballo was shot and killed while intervening in a shooting incident while off duty at approximately 1:30 pm.

He was patronizing a barber shop on Calle Emilia Príncipe when several men started smoking marijuana in front of it. When the shop owner asked the men to leave he was attacked. Officer Laza-Caraballo identified himself as an officer and attempted to intervene when several of the subjects entered with rifles and opened fire.

Officer Laza-Caraballo was able to return fire, killing one of the men and wounding a second one before being fatally shot. The remaining two subjects fled the scene and remain at large. Three of the men, including the two who Officer Laza-Caraballo shot, were brothers.

Officer Laza-Caraballo had served with the Juncos Municipal Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his two children.

DETAILS:

Firefighter Zachary Anthony and Firefighter Ivan Flanscha were killed from a collapse at the scene of a multi-alarm fire that began the previous day. Fire crews were still on-scene putting out hot spots that were flaring up nearly twenty-four hours later.

Firefighters Flanscha and Anthony were transported to the hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. Two other firefighters injured in the collapse are reported to be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. Prior to the fire breaking out, the 150 year old multi-story structure, known as the Weaver Organ and Piano building, was being renovated into apartments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities.

Firefighter Michael R. Davidson was killed and two other firefighters were seriously injured in a Harlem five-alarm fire that broke out in a former jazz club that was being used as a film set. Firefighter Davidson was operating the fire hose nozzle in the basement of the building when fire conditions intensified and Davidson became separated from the other firefighters. Firefighter Davidson was removed from the structure and taken to Harlem hospital where he was declared deceased. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities.

Assistant Fire Chief Rodney D Baker, Jr.

Madison Township-Kunkle Fire Department, Ohio

DETAILS:

After attending an earlier fire department training meeting, Assistant Chief Rodney D. Baker, Jr., responded to a grass fire at 2229hrs on March, 15, 2018. Chief Baker (Chief 51) was first on scene as the commanding officer for the incident and was back in service at 2,336hrs. The following day, while attending a family event, Chief Baker became ill and collapsed at 1638hrs. Family members trained in CPR immediately came to Chief Baker’s aid while the Pioneer Fire Department and Williams County EMS were called to the scene. Assistant Chief Baker was transported to Bryan hospital where, despite all efforts, he later passed away from a reported cardiac event.

DETAILS:

While on-duty at the fire station, Firefighter-Operator Allen Headley was found unresponsive in the fire station day room. Firefighter-Operator Headly was treated by fellow responders and transported to the hospital but succumbed to a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined.
