Police Officer Paul Morris was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 18, near Highway 35, at approximately 12:00 pm.

His patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree before becoming engulfed in flames.

Officer Morris had served with the Raleigh Police Department for two years and previously served with the Reservoir Police Department.

He was responding to another accident scene on the interstate when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Firefighter William F. Brinza III responded to a reported structure fire near Elk River Marina. While still in the driver seat shortly after arriving on scene, Firefighter Brinza suffered a medical event. Despite the efforts of his fellow firefighters and Grove EMS paramedics already on scene, Firefighter Brinza succumbed to a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined.

On May 13, 2018, Firefighter Thomas Albert Cannon went into cardiac arrest at the beginning of his shift while performing truck and equipment checks in the firehouse. Firefighter Cannon was treated by fellow responders then rushed to the hospital where he passed away the following day.ature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined.
