DETAILS:

K9 Bandit was shot and killed while attempting an apprehension of a double murder suspect in Butte County.

Officers had been alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the Camp Fire evacuation zone and learned that the vehicle was connected to a parolee wanted for a double murder. When responding officers tapped on the window to wake the man up he made furtive movements towards a weapon in his jacket, causing the officers to seek cover. The man then led officers on a vehicle pursuit until his vehicle immobilized by stop sticks in the area of Highway 70 and Pentz Road.

K9 Bandit was released for an apprehension after the man refused to exit the vehicle. As Bandit made the apprehension the man pulled out a firearm. Officers on scene opened fire, fatally wounding the man and striking K9 Bandit in the crossfire. A pit bull in the man's vehicle then began to attack K9 Bandit before being shot by officers.

Sergeant Ronald Lee Helus

Sergeant Ron Helus was shot and killed after responding to an active shooter at a bar at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive in Thousand Oaks.

When he arrived, Sergeant Helus heard gunfire coming from inside the bar, which was occupied by nearly 200 college students. He and a California Highway Patrol officer immediately made entry into the bar and confronted the shooter, but Sergeant Helus was shot and severely wounded. The other officer was able to pull Sergeant Helus from the building and provided medical aid.

Sergeant Helus was taken to a local hospital where he died from his wounds. Eleven citizens were also shot and killed in the incident, and numerous others were wounded.

The suspect was later found dead inside the bar from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sergeant Helus served with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for 29 years. He is survived by his wife and son.

Police Officer Jared Franks was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of South Elm-Eugene Street and Webster Road while responding to a robbery in progress call.

His patrol car collided with another patrol car at the intersection and then struck a house. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Franks had served with the Greensboro Police Department for 2-1/2 years and was assigned to the District Two Patrol Division.

Police Officer Toshio Hirai succumbed to injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash the previous day.

His police motorcycle was struck by a car at the intersection of Western Avenue and 238th Street, in Harbor City, while he was en route to the police station.

Officer Hirai had served with the Gardena Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and 2-year-old son.

DETAILS:

K9 Axe was shot and killed after officers responded to reports of an armed subject outside of a banquet hall at 26211 Harper Avenue.

As officers arrived on the scene they encountered a subject who was armed with a rifle and handgun. The man fled on foot with officers in pursuit. K9 Axe was deployed for an apprehension and was shot by the man.

Officers returned fire, killing the subject.

K9 Axe had served with the St. Clair Shores Police Department for two years.

K9 Axe was named in memory of U.S. Navy SEAL Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Axelson who was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2005.

DETAILS:

Assistant Chief Dennis Straight was directing traffic at an accident scene on the on-ramp to Highway 5 from the northbound lane of Highway 521 when he was struck by a vehicle. Life-saving efforts were administered on scene and Straight was then transported to Springs Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
