DETAILS:

Trooper Kevin Conner was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle on U.S. 701, near Sellers Town Road, in Columbus County at 12:15 am.

The subject opened fire on Trooper Conner as he was approaching the stopped vehicle, fatally wounding him. The man fled but was located near Fair Bluff. He lead officers on a pursuit until his vehicle became disabled on railroad tracks in the town. He then fled on foot but was located and taken into custody at 4:00 am.

A good samaritan happened upon Trooper Conner about an hour after he was shot and called 911. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 20-year-old suspect, who was driving a stolen truck, served three months in prison and is now on probation for firing a gun into an occupied car in Chadbourn in 2015. He is being held in the Columbus County Jail with no bond.

Trooper Conner had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and two children. In 2011 he saved a driver's life when he extinguished a fire in the man's car after being involved in an accident.

Services will be held Sunday, October 21st, at South Columbus High School located at 40 Stallion Drive, Tabor City, North Carolina. Visitation begins at 1:00 pm with the funeral to immediately follow.

Corrections Officer Mark Anthony Gaspich

Corrections Officer Mark Gaspich suffered a fatal heart attack after climbing two ladders to reach the observation platform of a guard tower at SCI Camp Hill.

He began to feel ill and then had to climb down the ladders to seek treatment. He collapsed after reaching the bottom of the tower.

Officer Gaspich had served in law enforcement for over 15 years. He had served with the Dauphin County Sheriff's Office prior to his service with the Pennslyvania Department of Corrections. He also served a volunteer firefighter with the Linglestown Fire Company.

Officer Gaspich is survived by his father and two brothers.

Probationary Firefighter Joshua Eugin

DETAILS:

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, Probationary Firefighter Joshua Eugin was participating in a multi-department training exercise. Eugin was taking part in a "blackout drill," in which firefighters simulate rescuing victims inside a dark structure with fake smoke. Eugin collapsed while on-scene and fellow firefighters performed CPR. He was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be reported.
