DETAILS:

Police Officer Terrence Carraway was shot and killed while responding to assist three Florence County Sheriff's Office deputies who had been shot and wounded while serving a sexual assault warrant at a house off of Vintage Drive.

Another subject in the house opened fire on the deputies as they approached the house, wounding all three. The man then positioned himself in a vantage point in a second-floor window, giving him a view of fire of several hundred yards. Officer Carraway, along with three other Florence police officers, responded to the scene and were attempting to rescue the three wounded deputies when the subject opened fire on them too, shooting all four.

All of the wounded officers were transported to a local hospital where Officer Carraway succumbed to his wounds.

The subject remained barricaded inside of his home for two hours before being taken into custody.

Officer Carraway had served with the Florence Police Department for 30 years.

DETAILS:

Patrolman James White and Corporal Zach Moak were shot and killed in front of a home at 630 North Sixth Street while responding to reports of shots fired shortly before 5:00 am.

Both officers encountered a male subject in front of the home and exchanged shots. The subject and both officers were struck during the shooting. Patrolman White and Corporal Moak were both transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center where they succumbed to their wounds.

The subject was taken into custody and taken to a separate hospital. Two additional subjects were taken into custody as part of the investigation.

Patrolman White, who served in the Army National Guard, is survived by his fiancee, two young sons, his parents, sister, stepfather, stepsister, stepbrother and other family members.

K9 Fang was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend an armed carjacking suspect near I-10 and Commerce Center Parkway.

The subject had stolen the vehicle at gunpoint approximately one hour earlier. The vehicle was located and turned off remotely as it traveled on I-10 and the driver fled into the nearby woods. K9 Fang was released to apprehend the suspect but was shot and killed. The subject was apprehended by a second canine and his handler moments later.

K9 Fang served as a patrol canine and explosives detection canine.

K9 Rush died as the result of exposure to chemicals that occurred on September 23rd, 2018.

K9 Rush and his handler were clearing a building after responding to reports of a burglary in progress at the old Radius Specialty Hospital at 45 Townsend Street in Roxbury. During the search, K9 Rush ingested or inhaled toxic chemicals that were present in the building. The chemicals caused him to go into respiratory distress.

He was taken to a veterinary hospital where he remained for eight days until it was determined he could not recover, and he was humanely euthanized.

K9 Rush had served with the Boston Police Department as a patrol and narcotics detection canine for three years.

K9 Rocky died after a foreign object accidentally became lodged in his mouth, blocking his airway, during a training exercise in the area of Morrish Road and Fortino Drive in Swartz Creek, Michigan.

His handler rushed him to a local veterinary hospital but they were unable to revive him.

K9 Rocky had served with the Genessee County Sheriff's Office for one year.

Firefighter Russell Hayes

DETAILS:

On Oct. 3, Firefighter Russell Hayes, while driving a department truck, was on his way to have a pump inspected for annual certification. Hayes lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right side of the road, then overcorrected as he tried to get back, causing it to travel off the left side of the road and overturn. Hayes was air lifted to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO, where he later died from injuries sustained in the accident.
