Police Officer Jorge Cabrera died after contracting COVID-19 as the result of a presumed exposure while on duty. Officer Cabrera had served with the Mission police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and three children. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Corrections Officer V Herbert Garcia died after contracting COVID-19 during an outbreak among staff and inmates at the Terrell Unit. Officer Garcia had served with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 29 years and was assigned to the Southern Regional Transportation Unit. He is survived by his three children. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Corporal Michael Ambrosino died after contracting COVID-19 as the result of a presumed exposure while on duty. Corporal Ambrosino had served with the Horry County Police Department for seven years and had served in law enforcement for 36 years. He had previously served as a law enforcement in New York state with the New York State Department of Corrections, Philmont Police Department, and Coxsackie Police Department. He is survived by his wife. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Sergeant Virgil Thomas died after contracting COVID-19 during a call for service. Sergeant Thomas had served with the Richmond Police Department for 24 years. He had previously served with the Albany Police Department and Novato Police Department for four years. He is survived by his wife and four children. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Ranger Brendan Unitt

Larimer County Department of Natural Resources, Colorado

EOW: Aug. 20, 2020 | Age: 27 | Tour: 6 Months

Ranger Brendan Unitt drowned while responding to a distressed boater on Horsetooth Reservoir near Soldier Canyon Dam at about 9:30 pm. Ranger Unitt had been conducting a foot patrol at the campgrounds on the west shore of the reservoir when a strong-wind event occurred. He was dispatched to assist a distressed boater, but when he returned to his boat he discovered it had been blown off of the shoreline. It is believed that he removed his flotation device in an attempt to swim to the boat to retrieve it. A massive search was undertaken when he failed to arrive at the distressed boater call or respond to dispatchers. His body was located at approximately 3:30 am the following morning. Ranger Unitt was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources for six months.

Deputy Sheriff Rick Treadwell died as the result of contracting COVID-19 in a presumed exposure while on duty. Deputy Treadwell had served with the Dane County Sheriff's Office for 25 years and was assigned to the Dane County Law Enforcement Training Center. He is survived by his wife and three children. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Police Officer Bryan Brown was killed as he and other officers responded to reports of an armed man driving erratically near the Desert Diamond Why Casino near Why, Arizona, at about 9:00 am. Officer Brown suffered serious injuries while attempting to arrest the man and was flown to a hospital in Phoenix, where he succumbed to his injuries. Members of the United States Border Patrol, who had responded to assist, arrested the subject following a pursuit. Officer Brown was a United States military veteran.

On August 17, 2020, Firefighter David Closs and other firefighters from the Avis Fire Company #1, responded to a residential structure fire. Firefighter Closs was working scene safety a short distance away from the actual structure fire when he suffered a medical emergency and was immediately taken to the local hospital. He passed away on August 23, 2020 from an apparent heart attack.

St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department

On Tuesday, August 25, 2020, Firefighter/First Responder Brian Stephen Smith and other fire department personnel, responded to a call of a water rescue on the beach. Firefighter/First Responder Smith went into the water to rescue a man and a juvenile and got swept up by the current. He was rescued from the water and immediately taken to the Weems Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

On Friday, July 31, 2020, Captain Joseph Liedel, while in the process of responding to a medical call, left his residence to get into his vehicle when he collapsed next to it. He was immediately rushed to the Monroe Promedica Regional Hospital and then flown to Toledo Promedica Hospital for further care. Captain Liedel passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020, from a CVA.

City of Converse, TX Fire Department

Captain Bryant Anderson, during his official tour of duty, came in contact with persons treating patients who were COVID-19 positive and exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Captain Anderson remained at home for several days attempting to recover, but his condition worsened until he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He was treated in the Intensive Care Unit for several weeks, until being placed on a ventilator. Captain Anderson passed away from complications related to the virus on August 18, 2020.
