Senior Airman Jason Phan was killed in a single-vehicle crash while patrolling the perimeter of the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Two other Air Force Security Forces personnel were injured in the crash. Senior Airman Phan was assigned to the 66th Security Forces Squadron. He is survived by his parents.
Deputy Sheriff Chris Smith died after contracting COVID-19 during a confirmed exposure at the McLennan County Tax Office at 215 North 5th Street in Waco. Deputy Smith was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He had served with the McLennan County Sheriff's Office for two years and had previously served with the Waco Police Department for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and child. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.
Master Jail Officer Robert Sunukjian died after contracting COVID-19 during an outbreak among staff and inmates at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Officer Sunukjian had served with the Hampton Roads Regional Jail for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and parents. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.
Sergeant Ethan Kaskin was killed when his department vehicle was struck head-on on the Highway 24 bridge, near Wham Road in Anderson County, at 6:30 am. An oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. Sergeant Kaskin had served with the Anderson Police Department for 12 years and was assigned to the Investigations Unit. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Deputy Sheriff Kenny Ingram and Deputy Sheriff Anthony White were killed in a vehicle crash on I-20 at exit 190 in Columbia County. They were en route to Augusta, Georgia, to pick up an inmate to be returned to Fulton County. Their department vehicle struck the back of a tractor-trailer that had stopped in traffic. Deputy Ingram had served with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office for 15 years.
Deputy Sheriff Anthony White and Deputy Sheriff Kenny Ingram were killed in a vehicle crash on I-20 at exit 190 in Columbia County. Deputy White had served with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office for eight years.
On September 22, 2020, Firefighter/Pilot Ricky Fulton died after his single-engine air tanker crashed while he was fighting the Schill Fire near Emmett, Idaho. The crash occurred under unknown circumstances and remains under investigation. The aircraft that Firefighter/Pilot Fulton was flying, T-857, was owned by Aero S.E.A.T. Incorporated and was on an on-call contract with BLM Fire and Aviation at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. The Schill Fire started the afternoon of September 22, 2020, in brush and steep terrain. It was contained later that night after it burned about 30 acres. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
While on duty, Fire Chief Richard “Rick” Todd responded to an EMS call where an individual had a known case of COVID-19. Fire Chief Todd subsequently contracted the virus and passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020.
