Deputy Sheriff Roy Gomez of complications related to contracting COVID-19 during a presumed exposure while on duty. Deputy Gomez had served with the Wharton County Sheriff's Office for 12 years and was assigned to supervise the Inmate Work Squad. He is survived by his wife and two children. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Corporal Daniel R. Abramovitz

Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office, Kansas

Corporal Daniel Abramovitz was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of 211th Street and McIntyre Road at about 4:00 pm. His department vehicle collided with the side of a school bus that failed to yield at the intersection. Corporal Abramovitz had served with the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office for 26 years and was scheduled to retire in four months. He is survived by his wife, three adult children, and two siblings.

Corporal Avery Hillman

Crisp County Sheriff's Office, Georgia

Corporal Avery Hillman died from complications of contracting COVID-19 while on duty at Crisp Regional Hospital. Corporal Hillman was a veteran of the Georgia National Guard. He had served with the Crisp County Sheriff's Office for 30 years and was assigned to the Hospital Division. In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.

Police Officer Marshall Waters, Jr.

Mangham Police Department, Louisiana

Police Officer Marshall Waters succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained on October 17th, 2020, while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 425 near the Franklin Parish / Richland Parish border. The vehicle had just been stolen during an armed commercial robbery in Rayville. As Officer Waters stepped from his patrol car the driver of the vehicle shot him once in the abdomen. The round struck Officer Waters below his vest and damaged his femoral artery. The man fled the scene and was arrested in Franklin Parish several hours later. Officer Waters remained hospitalized until succumbing to his wound. Officer Waters served as a part-time police officer with the Mangham Police Department and was a full-time EMT for the Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Service.

Firefighter Harold Boone, while on-duty at the fire station, contracted COVID-19 from fellow firefighters who had subsequently tested positive for the virus. He passed away from the disease on November 2, 2020.
