Detective Ryan Park and his wife, Detective Jamie Huntley-Park, were killed when their department vehicle was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on I-5 near Route 905 in San Ysidro. They were conducting follow-up investigations when the crash occurred at about 10:25 am. The driver of the other vehicle was also killed in the collision. Detective Park and Detective Huntley-Park were in the same academy class and later married. Both were promoted to the rank of Detective on the same day.

Police Officer Manny Familia drowned while attempting to rescue a juvenile who had gone underwater in a small pond in Green Hill Park at about 1:35 pm. Three juveniles who had gone into the water became distressed. One of the juveniles went underwater and failed to surface. Officer Familia and several other officers responded to the pond and entered the water in an effort to save all three. Officers were able to bring the other two juveniles to shore, however, Officer Familia failed to surface while trying to save the third juvenile. Officer Familia was recovered from the water approximately one hour later and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The juvenile's body was recovered approximately one hour later. Officer Familia had served with the Worcester Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
Deputy Sheriff Bill Smith drowned while attempting a water rescue of three distressed swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico off of Fort Morgan Road. He and another deputy entered the water in an attempt to rescue the three swimmers. Deputy Smith also became distressed during the rescue. Deputy Smith was taken to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead. The other deputy and all three swimmers were also treated at local facilities. Deputy Smith had served with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office for seven years. He had previously served with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and had served as a firefighter for 30 years.
K9 Kitt was shot and killed when a domestic violence suspect opened fire on officers who were searching for him in a wooded area near Commercial Street and McCusker Drive at about 1:00 pm. The man had fled from a nearby apartment complex. As K9 Kitt performed a track the man opened fire from an ambush position, killing K9 Kitt and wounding two officers. Despite their wounds, the officers were able to return fire and killed the subject. K9 Kitt had served with the Braintree Police Department for 12 years.
On Thursday, June 10, 2021, while on his way to the fire station to respond to a vehicle accident that had occurred on Highway 70, Firefighter Ralph DeBlasi was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the 2200 block of Brice’s Creek Road. Fire department personnel responding to the first vehicle accident arrived on the scene and immediately provided EMS care to Firefighter DeBlasi, but he was unable to be revived.
ITASCA COUNTY, Minn. — Two people were killed when a dump truck crashed into an ambulance on Tuesday morning, and two other people suffered life-threatening injuries. EMT Troy Edward Boettcher, 51, and Joseph Michel Latimer, 17, were killed in the crash, Duluth News Tribune reported. EMS provider Kimberly Fay Hake, who was driving the ambulance, was transported to the hospital, along with the driver of the dump truck, Jeffrey Elvin Ekholm.
