K9 Rex was killed when his handler's patrol car was struck by a suspected drunk driver in Detroit at about 1:05 am. His handler was assisting with the closure of Route 10, at Linwood Street, due to flooding and had positioned his patrol SUV across all lanes of traffic. The road had already been closed for several hours when another vehicle struck his vehicle at a high rate of speed. K9 Rex suffered serious injuries and died after being transported to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Southfield. His handler, as well as multiple occupants of the other car, were injured. K9 Rex and his handler were assigned to the Metro South Post.
K9 Axel suffered a fatal medical emergency while conducting a track of an armed suspect in the 8700 block of Glen Park Court NW in Sparta Township. Deputies located the suspect in a vehicle after arriving at the scene of the home invasion burglary. The suspect fled on foot and K9 Axel was deployed to perform a track. He began to show symptoms of a medical emergency and was rushed to Animal Emergency Hospital where he died. K9 Axel had served with the Kent County Sheriff's Office for two years.
K9 Duke died after suffering heatstroke while tracking a hit-and-run suspect in Shenandoah County, Virginia, at about 11:30 am. K9 Duke had been requested to assist in the search for a subject who fled on foot after being involved in a crash on I-81 near mile marker 287. K9 Duke began to show signs of heat exhaustion during the track and was immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic where he later died later that night. K9 Duke had served with the Virginia State Police for five years and was assigned to the Culpeper Division Area 12 Office.
On Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, Chief Emeritus James Krouse responded to a wildland fire. While stretching hose lines, he experienced a medical emergency and collapsed. He was immediately taken to the local hospital where he passed away from an apparent heart attack.
On Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, Lieutenant/Paramedic Cody Traber responded to a reported brush fire. While investigating the fire, he fell from the Wandermere Bridge at Highway 395 and passed away from the injuries he sustained in the fall.
While on duty, Division Chief Mark Covil contracted COVID-19 at the fire station. He passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021 from the virus.
While on duty, Engineer Cory Phillip Collins contracted COVID-19 while responding to EMS calls. He passed away from the virus on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021.
Battalion Chief James "JB" Bernard Guiler was working a 24 hour overtime shift. At approximately 5:50 am, he was dispatched on a call and did not show up at the apparatus to respond. Crews went to wake him and found him deceased. The cause of death was an apparent heart attack.
On Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, Lieutenant Donald J. Trout was responding to a tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials that overturned and crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike at Interchange 8A. While getting ready to leave the station, Lieutenant Trout suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately transported to the local hospital where he passed away.
Captain Joe Manning died as the result of contracting COVID-19 while he was assigned to the Wayne County Jail at 1892 S Macon Street. Captain Manning served with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for over 31 years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, daughter, and eight grandchildren. Sergeant Clay Garrison died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Sergeant Garrison served with the Port of Galveston Police Department for 17 years. He is survived by his wife and two children. Police Officer Brandon Ard died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in a presumed exposure while assigned to Beach Patrol. Officer Ard was a U.S. Navy veteran and he had served with the Orange Beach Police Department for 24 years. He is survived by his two daughters. Police Officer Harminder Grewal succumbed to injuries sustained four days earlier when his patrol car was struck head-on by a pickup truck on Highway 99, near Dillard Road, at about 4:30 am. The oncoming vehicle crashed through a barrier on the divided highway and collided with the patrol car. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash. Officer Grewal and his partner, who were en route to assist with evacuation efforts ordered in response to the Caldor Fire, were both critically injured in the crash. Officer Grewal was transported to Kaiser South Sacramento where he remained until succumbing to his injuries. Officer Grewal had served with the Galt Police Department for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his parents and brother.
Correctional Officer Trainee Whitney Cloud was killed as the result of an accidental discharge while conducting firearms training at the Harry K. Singletary Training Academy in the Wakulla Correctional Institute in Crawdfordville. Officer Cloud was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to the wound. Officer Cloud had served with the Florida Department of Corrections for three months and was assigned to the Jefferson Correctional Institution.
Sergeant Christopher Wilson died from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Sergeant Wilson had served with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for 17 years. He is survived by his four children. Border Patrol Agent Chad McBroom died from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19. Agent McBroom had served with the United States Border Patrol for over 24 years and was assigned to the Tucson Sector Headquarters. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a granddaughter. Deputy First Class William Diaz died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Deputy Diaz had served with Lee County Sheriff's Office for three years. Sergeant Brian Mohl drowned after his patrol car was swept off Jacks Bridge Road into the Weekeepeemee River, in Woodbury, at about 3:30 am. He was checking water levels in the area during a period of severe rain in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida when his patrol was carried off the roadway. He was able to radio a distress call to dispatchers and a massive search was immediately undertaken. Sergeant Mohl was recovered from the river several hours later and was pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital. Sergeant Mohl had served with the Connecticut State Police for 26 years. He is survived by his wife, three children, parents, and five siblings.
