Firefighter Joshua Megill contracted COVID-19 while on duty and passed away from complications due to the virus on Sept. 9, 2021.
On Sept. 20, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Technician Jeffrey Billingsley suffered an apparent cardiac arrest while on duty. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment by emergency room staff, but he did not regain consciousness and was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:00 p.m.
Lieutenant Scott Chassells responded to several medical incidents during which he encountered COVID-19 positive patients and patients with COVID-19-like symptoms. Chassells subsequently contracted the virus and started showing symptoms on Aug. 15, 2021. He passed away from complications due to the virus on Sept. 18, 2021.
K9 Tito died in his handler's patrol car after the air conditioning malfunctioned. His handler had left him in the patrol car with the air conditioning on in order to set up training scenarios. When he returned to the patrol car to retrieve Tito he discovered that the air conditioning was blowing hot air into the car. Tito was rushed to a veterinary hospital but his condition deteriorated and he had to be humanely euthanized.
Police Officer Michelle Gattey died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer Gattey was a United States Air Force veteran. She joined the Georgetown Police Department as an intern before attending the police academy. She had served as a police officer for nine months. She is survived by her mother, sister, two brothers, and six nieces and nephews. Lieutenant Earnie Oldham died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Lieutenant Oldham had served with the Plano Police Department for 34 years. He is survived by his wife and twin children. Captain David "Mac" MacAlpine died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while he worked the checkpoint located at NC17 and the South Carolina state line. Captain MacAlpine was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son, two daughters, two granddaughters, and mother. Police Officer Carl Proper died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer Proper had served with the Kings Mountain Police Department for three years. He had served in law enforcement for 16 years. Officer Proper is survived by his wife and three children. Lieutenant John Stewart was killed during a vehicle pursuit in the 1000 block of North Matthews Road. The subject involved in the initial pursuit with Lake City police officers then carjacked another vehicle. He was taken into custody following another pursuit involving members of the Florence County Sheriff's Office. Lieutenant Stewart was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the Lake City Police for 13 years. He had served in law enforcement for over 21 years. Lieutenant Stewart is survived by his two sons and seven siblings.
Sergeant Richard Frankie died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Sergeant Frankie had served with the Fort Bend Independent School District Police Department for over three years. He had previously served with the Houston Independent School District Police for over 24 years. He is survived by his sister. Trooper Brian Pingry died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Trooper Pingry had served with the Florida Highway Patrol - Troop F for seven years. He is survived by his wife and two children. Lieutenant Brandi Stock died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Lieutenant Stock was a United States Army veteran. She had served with the Brooklet Police Department for three years. Lieutenant Stock had served as a law enforcement officer for over twelve years. She is survived by her husband. Senior Police Officer Bill Jeffrey was shot and killed in the 5300 block of Aeropark Drive at about 7:30 am while serving a warrant in Harris County. He and other officers had gone to the apartment to serve an arrest warrant as part of a high-level narcotics case. They made contact with a female subject who answered the door. As they spoke to her the wanted man emerged and opened fire without warning, striking Officer Jeffrey and another officer. Officers were able to return fire and killed the subject. Officer Jeffrey had served with the Houston Police Department for 30 years. He is survived by his wife and child. His wife had recently retired from the Houston Police Department.
Police Officer Joseph Kurer died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer Kurer was a United States Army veteran. He had served with the Fond du Lac Police Department for three years. He is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and sister. Deputy Sheriff Luke Gross was struck and killed by a vehicle investigating a crash on Route 3 in Trenton at about 4:00 am. Deputy Gross had served with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office for 18 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
K9 Kyra died a short time after she and her handler were involved in a vehicle pursuit and apprehension that had entered Ford County. Kyra started showing signs of distress immediately after the incident and was taken a local veterinary clinic where she died. K9 Kyra had served with the Ford County Sheriff's Office for eight years.
Corporal Gregory Campbell died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while working at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center at 1941 Phinizy Road in Augusta. Corporal Campbell had served with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for 14 years. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic.
