Sergeant Todd Thomas died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Sergeant Thomas was a United States Air Force veteran. He had served with the Griffin Police Department for 22 years. Sergeant Thomas is survived by his wife and two children. Border Patrol Agent Alfredo Ibarra died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Border Patrol Agent Ibarra had served with the United States Border Patrol for 10 years and was assigned to the Blythe Station in Yuma Sector. He is survived by his wife and three sons. Border Patrol Agent David Ramirez died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Border Patrol Agent Ramirez had served with the United States Border Patrol for 18 years and was assigned to the San Diego Sector's Intelligence Unit. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and father. Deputy Sheriff Teresa Fuller died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while working as the School Resource Officer at Rutland Elementary School at 1995 South Rutland Road in Mt. Juliet. Deputy Fuller had served with the Wilson County Sheriff's Department for 14 years. She is survived by her husband and a child. Senior Inspector Jared Keyworth succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle crash three days earlier in Mississippi while participating in an enforcement mission. His vehicle collided with another vehicle near the intersection of U.S. Route 49 and Monmouth Road in Florence. He was flown to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where he remained until succumbing to his injuries. Senior Inspector Keyworth was a U.S. Army veteran. He had served with the United States Marshals Service for 11 years and was assigned to the Investigative Operations Division in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During his service with the U.S. Army, Senior Inspector Keyworth escorted the riderless horse during President Ronald Reagan's funeral.
Captain Tony Sisk died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Captain Sisk had served with the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office for 17 years and was the commander of the Patrol Division. He had previously served with the Culpeper Police Department and Rappahannock County Sheriff's Office for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. On Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, Lieutenant Andrew Orphanoudakis responded to an EMS call with a patient with a known case of COVID-19. He subsequently contracted the virus and passed away on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021. Lieutenant Orphanoudakis has been posthumously promoted to Captain.
Sergeant Nick Risner succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day when he was critically wounded during a shootout with an auto theft suspect in Muscle Shoals. The suspect had shot the passenger of a vehicle he was riding in and pushed them out of the vehicle in the 800 block of Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals. The man then stole another vehicle and drove into the city of Sheffield. The vehicle was spotted by members of the Sheffield Police Department and pursued back into Muscle Shoals. Sergeant Risner used his patrol car to block the suspect's vehicle after it drove into a Walmart parking lot. The man opened fire on officers, wounding Sergeant Risner and another officer from the Sheffield Police Department. The subject was also wounded in the exchange of gunfire and taken into custody. Sergeant Risner was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the next day. The second officer was saved by his bullet-resistant vest. Sergeant Risner was a United States Army Reserve veteran and had served with the Sheffield Police Department for eight years.
Police Officer Darrell Adams was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on I-40 near North Watkins Street shortly after 11:00 am. He and other officers were investigating a vehicle accident when he was struck and killed. Officer Adams served with the Memphis Police Department for 5-1/2 years.
Group Supervisor Mike Garbo was shot and killed while he and other regional task force members conducted an inspection of an Amtrak train at the Amtrak Station in Tucson, Arizona. He and other task force members boarded the train, which was traveling from Los Angeles, California, to New Orleans, Louisiana, to conduct an inspection for narcotics. They had detained one subject and were escorting him from the train when another man opened fire on them, fatally wounding Group Supervisor Garbo and another DEA agent. The subject then wounded another task force officer as the two exchanged fire. The subject was later found dead inside of one of the train's bathrooms. Group Supervisor Garbo was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Group Supervisor Garbo had served with the Drug Enforcement Administration for 16 years and had previously served with the Metro Nashville Police Department in Tennessee.
On Aug. 21, 2021, while on duty, Engineer Mark Gillam provided medical care to patients for a 12-hour period during a local festival. On Aug. 25, 2021, Gillam became sick with symptoms. Because his symptoms worsened, Gillam went to the hospital on Aug. 30, 2021, where he tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted. Gillam was eventually placed on a ventilator and put into a medically induced coma but passed away from complications of the virus on Oct. 3, 2021.
On Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, Firefighter Joseph “Joey” Wright participated in strenuous mandatory ladder training with the Nichols Fire Protection District. After the training was completed, he continued to work at the department assisting with the CAD system. He then left and went to work where the onset of chest pains and dizziness occurred. He was sent to an immediate care center where they evaluated him and transported him by ambulance to the hospital. He remained in the Intensive Care Unit for 10 days before passing away on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, from numerous heart attacks.
