Deputy Constable Kareem Atkins

Harris County Constable's Office - Precinct 4, Texas

EOW: Oct. 16, 2021 | Age: 30 | Tour: 2 years

Deputy Constable Kareem Atkins was shot and killed from ambush while arresting a robbery suspect in the parking lot of a sports bar at 4477 North Freeway in Houston. He and two other deputy constables were working a secondary employment assignment at the restaurant when a patron informed them of a robbery in the parking lot. Deputy Atkins and one of the other deputies responded to the location and were taking a suspect into custody when another man opened fire on them from behind with an AR-15 rifle. Deputy Atkins was struck in the head and fatally wounded while the second deputy was shot in the back and seriously wounded. The third deputy heard the shots and was wounded as he rushed to assist the others. Deputy Atkins was transported to a Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A person of interest was taken into custody. Deputy Constable Atkins has served with the Harris County Constable's Office - Precinct 4 for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Lieutenant William Oscar McMurtray, III

Burke County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina

Lieutenant Mac McMurtray died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Lieutenant McMurtray was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Burke County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.

Windsor Police Department, Colorado

Police Officer Ty Powell died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer Powell was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Windsor Police Department for 19 years. He had previously served with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office for one year and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office for one year. He is survived by his wife and five children. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.

Deputy Sheriff Oliver Little died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Deputy Sheriff Little had served with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office for six years. He is survived by two children. Sergeant Raquel Saunders died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while in the line of duty. Sergeant Saunders had served with the Amarillo Police Department for 23 years and had previously served with the Potter County Sheriff's Office for four years. She is survived by four children. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.

Police Officer Andy MacDonald died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer MacDonald had served with the Grand Prairie Police Department Police Department for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, father, and three brothers. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.

Police Officer Yandy Chirino

Hollywood Police Department, Florida

EOW: Oct. 17, 2021 | Age: 28 | Tour: 4 years

Police Officer Yandy Chirino was shot and killed after responding to reports of a suspicious person pulling on door handles in the 4000 block of North Hills Drive at about 10:30 pm. The man began struggling with officers when they attempted to detain him. He drew a concealed handgun and shot Officer Chirino during the struggle. Other officers were able to take him into custody and then rendered aid to Officer Chirino. He was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in a police car but succumbed to his wounds a short time later. The subject was charged with burglary, assault of a law enforcement officer, carrying a concealed firearm, grand larceny of a firearm, resisting arrest with violence, and first-degree murder. Officer Chirino had served with the Hollywood Police Department for four years. He had been the recipient of five supervisor's commendations and had been recognized as Officer of the Month in June 2020.

Police Officer Ryan Hayworth

Knightdale Police Department, North Carolina

EOW: Oct. 17, 2021 | Age: 23 | Tour: 3 months

Police Officer Ryan Hayworth was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind by a suspected drunk driver at about 2:40 am. Officer Hayworth, along with his training officer, were at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on I-540, near mile marker 22, when their patrol car was struck by the other vehicle, which failed to move over or reduce its speed. Officer Hayworth suffered fatal injuries in the collision. His training officer, as well as the original accident victim and the suspected drunk driver, were seriously injured. Officer Hayworth was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Knightdale Police Department for only three months. He is survived by his father, mother, brother, and two step-brothers. His father was a retired Police Chief of the Zebulon Police Department.

Trooper Ted Benda

Iowa State Patrol, Iowa

EOW: Oct. 20, 2021 | Age: 37 | Tour: 16 years

Trooper Ted Benda succumbed to injuries sustained six days earlier when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash. He was responding to assist deputies from the Clayton County Sheriff's Office with a wanted subject at about 11:30 pm when his patrol car left the roadway on Iowa Highway 51 six miles north of Postville. He was flown to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries. Trooper Benda had served with the Iowa State Patrol for five years and had previously served with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, four children, parents, and siblings.

Detention Officer Anthony Nicoletti

Mohave County Sheriff's Office, Arizona

Detention Officer Tony Nicoletti died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while working at 501 West Highway 66 in Kingman. Detention Officer Nicoletti had served with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office for six years and had previously served with the Arizona Department of Corrections for five years. He is survived by his wife and three children. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.

Firefighter/Paramedic Marshall Grant Brookfield

Emergency Response Logistics, Colorado

EOW: Sept. 29, 2021 | Age: 41 | Tour: None

Wildland Firefighter/Paramedic Marshall Grant Brookfield was deployed to the McCash fire in Orleans, CA when he contracted COVID-19 and a rare fungal infection that was found to be directly associated to the wildfires and smoke inhalation. He was removed from the incident due to severe illness and sent to the hospital where he was admitted and remained in the Intensive Care Unit until his passing on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021.
