On Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, Fire Chief Danny L. Deyo responded to an EMS call with a patient with a known case of COVID-19. He subsequently contracted the virus and passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021.
Deputy Sheriff Lena Marshall succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three days earlier while responding to a domestic disturbance call at 6416 Highway 124 in Hoschton. As she and another deputy contacted someone in the home a woman opened fire on them, wounding Deputy Marshall. Deputy Marshall's partner returned fire and killed the woman. Deputy Marshall was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her wounds. Deputy Marshall had served with Jackson County Sheriff's Office for almost two years and had previously served with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Winder Police Department.
Police Officer Paramhans Desai succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained at about 6:00 pm on November 4th, 2021, while responding to a domestic violence call near the intersection of Keys Ferry Road and Floresta Drive in McDonough. Officer Desai was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he remained on life support until succumbing to his wounds on November 8th, 2021. He continued to serve his community after his passing by having multiple organs donated. The subject who shot Officer Desai fled the area and remained at large for five days. He committed suicide after barricading himself inside of a home in Clayton County as officers attempted to take him into custody. Officer Desai had previously served with the DeKalb County Police Department and the Georgia Department of Corrections. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
Lieutenant Chad Brackman was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic near the intersection of N 87th Street and N Pima Road in Scottsdale. He was working an overtime assignment at about 11:00 am when he was struck. He was transported to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Lieutenant Brackman had served with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for 22 years and was assigned to the Lake Patrol Division. He is survived by his wife, two children, and two stepchildren.
Deputy Sheriff John Moon died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty while guarding on a COVID-19 positive inmate at the Tomball Regional Medical Center at 605 Holderrieth Boulevard. Deputy Moon had served with the Waller County Sheriff's Office for 23 years. He is survived by his mother and son. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.
On Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, Engineer Michael K. Freeland responded to a vehicle accident that involved an extensive and long extrication. While at the scene, Engineer Freeland experienced a medical emergency. Crews immediately performed live-saving measures and he was transported to the UF Health at Jacksonville, where he passed away shortly thereafter. Investigation into the cause of Engineer Michael K. Freeland’s death is ongoing.
Police Officer Kris Hutchison died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while working at the Haltom Middle School at 5001 Hadley Street in Haltom City. Officer Hutchison was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the Haltom City Police Department for five years as a school resource officer and an advisor to Law Enforcement Explorer Post #502. He had previously served two years with the Kennedale Police Department and one year with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office. Officer Hutchison is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Lieutenant David Formeza died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Lieutenant Formeza had served with the Perth Amboy Police Department for 18 years. He is survived by his brother. Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.
