On Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, during the fire department’s bi-monthly training drill, Chief Everette Watson left the station to go to another station to pick up supplies for the department’s new engine. His son accompanied the Chief to assist with the effort. While at the second station, Chief Watson suffered a medical emergency. Life-saving efforts were immediately performed, but were unsuccessful. Chief Watson passed away from an apparent heart attack.
Assistant Chief James “Jimmy” Scanlon, 38, died Friday after responding to a fire alarm at an apartment complex on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. On Thursday, as he was leaving his other job, he began to feel unwell and pulled his vehicle to the side of the road. EMS providers treated him for cardiac arrest and transported him to a hospital, where he died of a heart attack.He was a 14-year member of the Hopkins Fire Department and had served with the Hopkins Police Department for 16 years, according to the fire department. The Bloomington Police Department said he also worked as a dispatcher.
Detective Kristina Zell died from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Detective Zell had served with the Niagara Falls Police Department for over 22 years and was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. She had previously served with the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force. She is survived by her parents and two brothers.
