Police Officer Jake Palin

Police Officer Jake Wallin was shot and killed while he and other officers investigated a traffic crash at the intersection of 25th Street South and 9th Avenue South at about 2:45 pm. While officers were on scene a male subject opened fire on officers, firefighters, and bystanders without warning. Officer Wallin was killed, two other officers were critically wounded, and a bystander was wounded. Officer Wallin's field training officer was able to return fire and killed the subject. Officer Wallin was a Minnesota Army National Guard veteran. He had served with the Fargo Police Department for only three months and was completing field training at the time of the shooting.

Police Officer Anthony Ferguson

Alamogordo Police Department, New Mexico

Police Officer Anthony Ferguson succumbed to a gunshot wound he received during a foot pursuit of a subject who had fled the scene of a vehicle accident at 2:18 am. Officers attempted a traffic stop when they noticed a subject driving a vehicle without headlights or taillights. When the vehicle sped away, officers did not initiate a pursuit. About a mile away, the vehicle crashed into a pole at First Street and Delaware Avenue. After the subject fled on foot, Officer Ferguson pursued the man. The subject pulled out a shotgun and fired, hitting Officer Ferguson in the face. Another officer returned fire and struck the subject in the leg. Officer Ferguson was flown to UMC-El Paso where he succumbed to his wounds the next day. The subject was treated at the hospital and has been charged with Attempt to Commit 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery on a Police Officer with a Deadly Weapon, Tampering with Evidence, Aggravated Fleeing of a Police Officer, Resisting and Evading a Police Officer, Criminal Trespass, Lights Required on Vehicle, Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle, and Reckless Driving. The subject had fired at officers in January 2023. Officer Ferguson had served with the Alamogordo Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his daughter, son, mother, father, and four brothers.

Captain Christopher J. Garrow

Captain Chris Garrow died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. Captain Garrow was a United States Marine Corps veteran and served with the New York State Police for 23 years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, father, mother, and brother.

Firefighter Jordan Melton

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, Alabama

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Station 9 in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham, Firefighter Jordan Melton and Firefighter Jamal Jones were near the bay doors when they were shot by an assailant in the chest and legs. On Monday, July 17, 2023, Firefighter Jordan Melton succumbed to his injuries. Firefighter Jamal Jones remains in stable condition. Police are searching for suspects, and this is an ongoing investigation.

Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman

Memphis Fire Department, Tennessee

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, members of the Memphis Fire Department responded to a residential fire. While fighting the fire, 4 firefighters became trapped. The firefighters were rescued and immediately transported to the hospital. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 19, 2023, Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman passed away from the injuries he sustained in the fire. The other 3 firefighters remain in the hospital.
