Deputy Sheriff Tim Guyer suffered a heart attack after completing mandatory physical training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at 5402 Sugar Grove Road in Plainfield. Deputy Guyer returned to his dormitory room to clean up after physical training. At 7:30 am, he was found unresponsive in his room when he did not report for breakfast. Despite life-saving measures, he was unable to be revived. Deputy Guyer had served with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for eight months. He is survived by his wife and four children.
Police Officer Jonah Oswald succumbed to gunshot wounds he received when he attempted to arrest two subjects who fled from officers in a stolen vehicle. At 7:30 am, Lenexa Police responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in Mission. As they attempted to apprehend the subjects, the male and female fled, hitting one of the Lenexa Patrol vehicles. Officers from neighboring agencies, including the Fairway Police Department, assisted in the pursuit on Interstate 35 until the subjects crashed their vehicle and ran into the QuikTrip at 4700 Lamar Avenue in Mission. Officer Oswald and other officers entered the store, and when officers attempted to arrest the subjects, gunfire broke out. Officer Oswald was critically injured and transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the next day. The male subject was shot and killed. The female subject is in custody and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Officer Oswald was a United States Army Reserve veteran who had served with the Fairway Police Department for four years and previously served with the Buckner Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.
On Sunday, August 6, 2023, two firefighting helicopters, a Sikorsky S-64E and a Bell 407, collided in Cabazon, California, while battling the Broadway Wildland Fire, a vegetation fire sparked by a nearby structure fire. While the Sikorsky S-64E helicopter was able to land safely, the Bell 407 crashed. All three occupants of this helicopter, Assistant Chief Josh Bischof, Captain Timothy “Tim” Rodriguez, and Contract Pilot Tony Sousa were killed. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Officer Bill Sapolu succumbed to injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Farrington Highway, east of Fort Barrette Road in Kapolei, on July 11th, 2023. He was responding to backup another officer on a weapons violation call at about 9:00 pm when his motorcycle struck a concrete median. He was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries. He remained in critical condition until his organs could be donated. Officer Sapolu was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran and had served with the Honolulu Police Department for 21 years. He is survived by his wife and children.
An Indiana paramedic was killed and another seriously injured Saturday in a collision between their ambulance and another vehicle. Starke County Paramedic Michael Wilcox was pronounced scene at the intersection of county roads 800 and 700. Paramedic Brandy Salita is in serious condition at Northwest Hospital in LaPorte, WNDU reported. The ambulance was headed to an emergency when it was struck in the side by a Hyundai that was headed north on 700. Upon impact, the ambulance rolled onto its side, Eva Horan, the driver of the Hyundai, suffered minor injuries, according to abc57. Starke County first responders escorted Wilcox to the coroner's office.
