Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Nelson

A Selma firefighter-paramedic left paralyzed in a training incident died in his sleep Thursday -- the 10th anniversary, Former Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Nelson, 55, was known for positive attitude and kind personality, KGPE reported. He joined the department in 2006. Just 15 days ago, the department dedicated a ladder truck to him.

Deputy Sheriff Christopher Johnson

Harnett County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina

Deputy Sheriff Chris Johnson was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Darroch Road in Lillington at 2:56 p.m. Deputy Johnson had left Highland Middle School and was on his way to another school when he collided with a tractor-trailer. His patrol vehicle was thrown into multiple vehicles. He died at the scene. Johnson was with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office for 16 months and was the Student Resource Officer at Highland Middle School. He previously served with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office for 16 years and the Dunn Police Department for 9 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Captain William “Tony” Anthony Baumgartner

On Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, Captain William “Tony” Anthony Baumgartner was returning to the station from a residential structure fire when the apparatus he was driving left the roadway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the accident.

Deputy Sheriff Greg McCowan

Blount County Sheriff's Office, Tennessee

Deputy Sheriff McCowan was shot and killed while initiating a traffic stop at 4959 Sevierville Road in Maryville. Around 9:00 p.m., Deputy McCowan and his partner pulled over a vehicle for erratic driving. The driver would not cooperate and shot Deputy McCowan and the other deputy in the leg. She returned fire, but the subject fled on foot. Deputy McCowan was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The other deputy was treated at the hospital and released. The subject, who is a convicted felon, has not been apprehended. The felon's brother and girlfriend have been arrested for aiding the defendant after the commission of the homicide. Deputy McCowan had served with the Blount County Sheriff's Office for four years. He is survived by two children, a granddaughter, parents, and fiancée.

Patrol Officer Jonah Hernandez

Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico

Patrol Officer Jonah Hernandez was stabbed to death while responding to a trespassing call at the 300 block of South Valley Drive in Las Cruces. A witness to the stabbing shot the suspect and then used Officer Hernandez's radio for help. Officer Hernandez was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he died from his wounds. Officer Hernandez had served with the Las Cruces Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.
