Border Patrol Agent Chris Maland was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 91near Newport, Vermont, near the Canadian Border at 3:15 p.m. One suspect was shot and killed, and the second suspect was injured. He is in federal custody. Agent Maland was a United States Air Force veteran and had served with the United States Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection - United States Border Patrol for over nine years. He was assigned to the Swanton Sector. He is survived by his mother, father, brother, and girlfriend.
Thomasville Firefighter Bill Nix, 72, was killed Jan. 16 when the pumper, in which he was riding, rolled over while they were responding. The Thomasville firefighter killed in a rollover crash earlier this month has been identified. Bill Nix, 72, a passenger in the rig, was orounounced dead at the scene on Jan. 16. The driver of the pumper, who was seriously injured, overcorrected while trying to regain control. The vehicle went off the left side of the road, struck a ditch and overturned, Ozarks First reported. When Nix retired from CFI Trucking in 2019, he joined the Thomasville Volunteer Fire Department. They had recently acquired a large military tanker, and needed someone with excellent driving skills and experience, according to his obituary. In 2022, he was selected as the firefighter of the year. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
Big Elm Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Capt. Roger Lathrop died while responding to a fire last week. A memorial service will be held Monday for a Big Elm Volunteer Fire Department firefighter who died last week responding to a fire. Rescue Capt. Roger Lathrop, 52, suffered a medical emergency on Jan. 23 while responding to a call for structure fire. "Roger was an integral part of our department and community and loved by all. Please keep the family and the members of the department in your thoughts and prayers," the Millerton, PA-based department shared in a statement. Calling hours will by Monday, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Olthof Funeral Home in Southport, NY. A firefighter's memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Lathrop leaves behind a wife of 30 years and three children.
