Police Officer Samuel Riveros was shot and killed while responding to reports of gunfire at the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue in Baldwin Park. At 7:12 p.m., when Officer Riveros and his partner arrived at the scene, they found one man unresponsive with a gunshot wound before they were met with gunfire. During the shootout, Officer Riveros was mortally wounded. Another officer was struck and transported to the hospital in stable condition. The man found unresponsive was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The suspect was also struck and is in stable condition. Officer Riveros had served with the Baldwin Park Police Department for nine years.
Police Officer Timothy Ontiveros succumbed to gunshot wounds he received during a traffic stop on Jordan Street at 10:55 p.m. on May 26, 2025. When Officer Ontiveros and another officer pulled over a driver, the man refused to roll down his window or give his identity. After negotiating with the subject for over eight minutes, the officers attempted to arrest the man. The subject pulled out a gun and fired at officers, striking Officer Ontiveros and barely missing the other officer, who returned fire, killing the subject. Officer Ontiveros was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington with gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder. He was flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he passed away on June 1, 2025. Officer Ontiveros had served with the Bloomfield Police Department for six months and previously served with the Farmington Police Department for almost a year. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department. He is survived by his daughters.
Dave Warfel, a Dauphin County volunteer fire chief, who worked as a supervisor at a Pennsylvania state forest, died Thursday at a Cumberland County fire academy, according to a press release. Warfel, the forest district maintenance supervisor at Weiser State Forest, died at the Wildland Fire Academy at Shippensburg University after a day of mentoring and teaching wildland firefighters. The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office is investigating Warfel’s death. Neither Warfel’s age, nor information about the circumstances around Warfel’s death were provided. Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn offered condolences and thanked Warfel for his service. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dave Warfel, whose dedication to public service was unwavering throughout his life. Beginning as a volunteer firefighter at a young age, his commitment to protecting communities and our natural resources never wavered. He was a respected and invaluable leader within the wildland firefighting community and made lasting contributions to DCNR through his expertise, professionalism, and leadership.
