Deputy Sheriff Adam Sherifi

Deputy Sheriff Adam Sherifi was shot and killed while serving a felony warrant at the 4300 block of State Highway 198 in Van Zandt County. Deputy Sherifi was assisting Canton police officers serving outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer. Around 10:22 p.m., shots were fired from the home and toward officers outside the residence, and gunfire was exchanged. Deputy Sherifi was mortally wounded and died at the scene. A Canton police officer was also wounded and was transported to the local hospital. The suspect was found deceased inside the home. Deputy Sherifi's survivors include his wife and three children.

Deputy Sheriff Caden Mullins was killed when his cruiser was struck by a coal truck at the intersection of West Virginia Route 10 and Rum Creek Road at approximately 4:30 PM. A passenger in the cruiser was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

*The $5,000 survivor benefit is paid when a line of duty death occurs. Line of duty is defined as AFBA members who are Emergency Service Providers to include law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical services providers who are killed while involved in operations at or responding to/from the scene of an incident. If death occurs otherwise, outside of a suicide, the beneficiary will receive a $2000 benefit.
